Furniture for a Small Apartment: Check the Fit Before You Buy

Multifunctional furniture is useful when you actually need its extra functions and have space to use them. A sofa bed does not solve a problem if it blocks the door when open. An extending table becomes inconvenient if every meal requires moving the rest of the room.
When furnishing an apartment in Portugal, start with a floor plan and your routines. This guide compares furniture types and practical checks; it is not a ranking of brands or a promise to save the same floor area in every home.
Separate everyday and occasional functions
List where you sleep, work, eat, welcome guests and store belongings. A permanent workstation and an occasional laptop surface need not be the same solution. For everyday sleeping, assess the actual model rather than merely checking whether it converts into a bed.
Mark doors, windows, sockets and projections on the plan. Draw each item in its closed and working positions. Allow for opening drawers and cupboards, pulling out chairs and moving through the room while the furniture is in use.
Compare the options
| Furniture type | Useful when | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Sofa bed | One area serves for sitting and sleeping | Sleeping surface, mechanism, effort, bedding storage and circulation |
| Extending table | The number of people seated changes | Both sizes, stability and storage for additional chairs |
| Storage bed | You need access to space below the bed | Opening method, access and assembly requirements |
| Modular storage | Belongings need different storage heights | Internal dimensions, fixing and access to upper sections |
| Fold-down desk | You need an occasional work surface | Depth, leg space, lighting and the manufacturer’s load limits |
Assess the mechanism, not just the photograph
Try the furniture where possible or request detailed information from the seller. Check how it opens, the usable dimensions and care instructions. If you will transform it daily, consider whether the process is convenient for you.
Wall beds and other fixed systems need installation conditions checked against the manufacturer’s instructions. A responsible installer should assess the actual fixing surface; a general online tip cannot establish a suitable fixing.
Check dimensions and the delivery route
- The item when closed and fully in use.
- Packaging dimensions and weight supplied by the seller.
- Doorways, lifts, stairs and turns.
- Space for unpacking and assembly.
- Access to windows, sockets and the circulation you need.
Do not use the dimensions of a similar model. A different module or armrest may change the fit. Record the exact reference and version in the purchasing schedule.
Compare the complete cost
Include delivery, carrying, assembly and required components. Check the seller’s terms for the particular order, including timing and how delivery issues are handled. Confirm the arrangements for custom-made items separately.
Check how the pieces work together
If individually suitable items do not work together, return to the overall layout. A design project or design consultation can help assess the room rather than one isolated product. This guide to furnishing after buying a home explains the sequence of decisions.
Send a floor plan and your selected items to discuss the help you need with furniture selection.
