Kitchen Design in Portugal: Layout, Ergonomics and Materials

A practical kitchen starts with everyday actions: bringing in groceries, storing food, preparing dinner, setting the table and loading the dishwasher. Attractive cabinet fronts cannot fix a layout in which these activities get in each other’s way.

When developing an interior design project in Portugal, I connect the kitchen with circulation, dining, storage and lighting elsewhere in the home. The following decisions are worth making before you order the cabinets.

Consider who cooks, how many people use the kitchen together, which appliances stay on the worktop and where you eat. Do you need a breakfast spot, substantial food storage or a coffee station? For an open-plan kitchen, include the way you relax and entertain.

Mark openings, projections, windowsill heights and existing connections on a measured plan. If renovation is planned, establish which dimensions may change. A property listing plan is not a substitute for checking measurements before manufacture.

Food storage, washing, preparation and cooking should form a sensible sequence. The fridge–sink–hob work triangle can help you review movement; it is not a compulsory arrangement for every kitchen. A well-planned single-wall kitchen can work too.

  • Decide where you put shopping bags and unpack groceries.
  • Provide preparation space where you actually cook.
  • Check whether open appliance doors block the main route.
  • Check how another person passes while someone is using the kitchen.

An island should serve a purpose and leave workable circulation. Draw it with stools in use, drawers open and neighbouring cabinet doors shown. A table or peninsula may be more practical in a smaller apartment. Choose the arrangement for your room rather than for its appearance in a reference photograph.

Select appliance models before finalising the cabinetry. Check installation dimensions, ventilation clearances and fitting requirements against the manufacturer’s documents. A general distance quoted in an article cannot replace the requirements of the chosen product.

Coordinate the extractor, sockets, water and other connections with the relevant professionals. Check fridge-door opening beside a wall, access to filters and servicing space. Choose the worktop and oven positions for the people who will use them.

Compare care requirements, edges, joints and manufacturer restrictions alongside patterns and colours. Resistance to stains, heat and cleaning products depends on the particular material. Ask for samples and care instructions before assuming that a surface suits every use.

For furnishing a house or apartment in Portugal, keep the cabinets, appliances, lighting and finishes in one specification, with model, dimensions, material, supplier and approval status.

Plan both general lighting and light for work surfaces. Check where the light falls and whether the person preparing food blocks it. Position dining lighting against the actual table layout.

View cabinet and worktop samples beside the floor and wall finishes, in daylight and with the evening lights on. An open kitchen also needs to relate to the living area. The guide to NCS colours and interior lighting explains why a colour code alone is not enough.

  • Confirmed dimensions and the final cabinet arrangement.
  • Appliance models and their installation requirements.
  • Circulation, door opening and storage positions.
  • Material samples, fittings and the complete order specification.
  • What delivery, assembly and connection include, and who provides each service.

If the layout is still uncertain, discuss it in an interior design consultation. Send your plans, photographs and priorities to discuss the support your property in Portugal needs before you commit to orders.
