Choosing Curtains for a House or Apartment in Portugal

Choose curtains for what you need at the window: an open view, evening privacy, softened daylight or darkness for sleeping. One fabric does not have to solve every task. Establish the function before selecting colour and pleats.
When furnishing a house or apartment in Portugal, I consider curtains alongside furniture, lighting and existing shutters or blinds. Agree the track, fixing and fitting arrangements as well as the fabric.
Define the purpose of each window treatment
Note when you use the room, what can be seen from outside and how much light control matters. In a bedroom, assess darkening; in a living room, consider the view and daytime use. Review existing shutters or blinds before ordering another layer.
Dense fabric alone does not guarantee complete darkness: light may pass around the sides and above the curtain. Ask the supplier to demonstrate the selected material and discuss the whole construction. A fabric name cannot establish its effect on room temperature.
Choose the hanging system before measuring
Confirm ceiling or wall fixing, the track or pole and the heading. Record projections from sills, handles, radiators and furniture. Check window opening and the space occupied by the curtain when drawn aside.
Measure from the agreed hanging point to the chosen lower edge. Fabric quantity depends on the track, fabric and heading; one fullness multiplier does not suit every order. The IKEA measuring guide also considers hanging arrangements and objects around the window.
View fabric samples at the window
Hold the sample against daylight, then review it with evening lights on. Compare it with flooring, upholstery and walls. Confirm composition, lining, care instructions and possible changes after washing with the manufacturer.
Terms such as natural, lightweight or blackout do not replace the product specification. Discuss maintenance separately from colour. Make sure the proposed fabric suits the way you intend to use and care for it.
Check the track, fixing and access
Confirm the mounting surface and the system’s load capacity with the chosen fabric. For motorised systems, agree power, controls and servicing access in advance. The installer should check whether the proposed fixing is suitable.
Different windows can need different constructions while sharing a palette. Coordinate them in the interior design project, particularly where recesses or ceiling changes are involved. The capsule interior approach helps relate textiles to the rest of the room.
What belongs in the confirmed order?
- Checked measurements and the agreed finished lower edge.
- Fabric reference, colour, lining and heading.
- Track or pole model, length and fixing components.
- What making, delivery, fitting and adjustment include.
- Agreed lead times and care instructions.
Separate fabric prices from the cost of finished curtains and fitting. Confirm final dimensions and availability before production. Review daytime and evening lighting when choosing the treatment around a window.
Curtain selection questions
Should every room have the same curtains?
No. A shared palette and character can work with different darkening levels, headings and lengths according to each room’s function.
When should selection begin?
Before ordering tracks and making curtains; for recessed systems, during the design stage. Send window photographs and your priorities to discuss the options in an interior design consultation.
