Open-Plan Kitchen and Living Room Design in Portugal

Plan an open kitchen and living room in Portugal: zoning, circulation, furniture, extraction, finishes and separate lighting settings before purchasing.

An open-plan kitchen and living room brings cooking, entertaining and relaxation together. A useful layout allows these activities to coexist: someone on the sofa does not obstruct preparation, the route to the table remains clear and everyday objects have a place.

Start with the way you live, then select furniture and finishes. In an interior design project in Portugal, I treat the kitchen and living room as a connected space rather than two separate shopping lists.

Describe activities that happen together

How many people cook and eat together? Do you work at the dining table, host guests or watch television? Identify simultaneous activities and where you need quiet or a clear surface.

Mark windows, doors, existing connections and furniture you want to keep. For a newly purchased property, check its condition and the accuracy of the plan first. The guide to furnishing a home after buying covers this preparation.

Check whether proposed changes are feasible

If the design requires demolition, moving the kitchen or altering services, obtain assessment from the relevant professionals first. Feasibility and the applicable approval process depend on the property. A photograph or decorative proposal does not replace these checks.

Agree appliance positions, extraction and connections before finalising cabinets. Check performance, installation and maintenance against the chosen equipment and conditions, rather than a single airflow figure for every kitchen.

Connect zones and circulation

Arrange food storage, preparation, cooking and serving in a sensible sequence. Then trace the route from the entrance to the table and sofa. Show open appliance doors, pulled-out chairs and unfolded furniture on the plan.

An island, peninsula or table can separate areas, but none is compulsory. Choose the arrangement that preserves circulation and suits your routines. The kitchen layout guide includes further checks before ordering cabinets.

Review the view from the living area

Look towards the kitchen from the sofa and entrance. Where will small appliances, crockery and everyday objects go? Closed storage and coordinated worktop positions can support order without making cooking inconvenient.

Choose sofa, table and chair sizes alongside the kitchen. Do not fill the room with one large item and leave arbitrary gaps for everything else. Include a practical storage plan for the things you use.

Coordinate lighting and materials

Cooking and relaxation need different lighting settings. Separate controls let you use the areas at different times. Locate fittings against the actual furniture arrangement rather than only the centre of the ceiling.

Review flooring, cabinets, worktop and walls together. Plan joints and transitions if you combine finishes. See the guides to open-plan material selection and home lighting planning.

Approve the whole plan before purchasing

  • Confirmed dimensions and the furniture layout.
  • Technical decisions about equipment and connections.
  • Approved samples and furniture and finish specifications.
  • Lighting, controls and power requirements.
  • The sequence of work, deliveries, assembly and checking.

When furnishing an apartment in Portugal, a shared schedule helps relate the kitchen to the rest of the home. Agree costs and timing against the actual scope and orders rather than a generic range.

Open-plan design questions

Does a wall always need to come down?

No. A partly open or separate arrangement may suit the property better. Establish the needs and constraints first.

Can we start by reviewing the existing plan?

Yes. An interior design consultation can address particular decisions. Send a plan and photographs of your home in Portugal to establish which questions need further work.
